The S&P CNX 500 is India’s first broad-based benchmark of the Indian capital market for comparing portfolio returns vis-a-vis market returns. The S&P CNX 500 represents about 90.30% of total market capitalization and about 80.02% of the total turnover on the NSE as on March 30, 2007. This is a good measure of how the overall capital markets have performed as they represent the most stocks traded on the exchange so its used as a proxy for the whole stock market.
